Zika virus in Ireland
Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.
The first case of Zika virus in Ireland was reported on February 2, 2016. Zika virus has been detected in two people with a history of traveling to a country affected by the mosquito-borne infection. The cases have been confirmed by the Health Service Executive of Ireland.
Two of the cases relate to people who picked up the virus in Colombia and were diagnosed on their return to Ireland while the third case originated in Barbados.
On March 1, 2016 the Department of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel advice for those visiting countries where Zika virus is active.
