Zika virus in New Zealand

New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.

New Zealand has a relatively low threat of Zika virus epidemic as the country has no species of mosquitoes which spread Zika virus.

As of 25 February 2016, 61 confirmed cases of Zika virus were reported in New Zealand. In all of the cases, the virus was contracted outside the country. Most of the cases were contracted in Tonga and Samoa.

In February 2016, three cases of Zika virus was confirmed in New Zealand. The patients who contracted the virus have traveled to Tonga where they got the virus.

In the week prior to 25 February, 14 cases of Zika virus were reported.
