- Jan 25: National IHR Focal Point for the United States of America notifies PAHO/WHO of the first laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika virus infection in St. Croix, one of the three main islands in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).
- Feb 1: International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on Zika virus meets in Geneva.
- Feb 1: World Health Organization declares Zika virus, "a public health emergency of international concern". This is the fourth time WHO has declared a public health emergency since the distinction was created in 2007.
2015
- May 2015: First case of Zika virus in Brazil reported
- May 2015: WHO’s Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) has been working closely with affected countries since May 2015
1947
- Apr 18: Researchers who are studying yellow fever virus found a rhesus monkey that researchers identified as 766 ran a fever of 39.7°C, about 2°C higher than normal. The monkey was said to have Zika virus.
